About Cape of Good Hope
The Cape of Good Hope route connects Atlantic and Indian Ocean shipping around southern Africa. It is the main long-distance alternative for tankers avoiding the Suez Canal and Red Sea corridor.
Unlike a narrow strait or canal, the Cape is an open-ocean chokepoint. TankerMap confirms a passage only when AIS positions show the same vessel on both the western and eastern approaches within the configured crossing window, reducing the chance that local coastal traffic is counted as a full Cape transit.
The live zone and daily series show crude, product, and LNG tanker activity around the Cape and make changes in Africa-rerouted traffic visible alongside the other TankerMap chokepoints.
Other straits: Strait of Hormuz · Suez Canal · Strait of Malacca · bab-el-mandeb · Strait of Gibraltar · Panama Canal · Bosphorus Strait · Danish Straits
