About Strait of Malacca

The Strait of Malacca, stretching 800 kilometres between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is the world's busiest shipping lane and the primary route for tankers moving energy from the Middle East to China, Japan, and South Korea. More than 80,000 ships transit the strait annually - including roughly 25 tankers per day carrying crude oil and LNG.

At its narrowest point near Singapore, the strait is only about 2.8 kilometres wide, making it one of the most congested and potentially vulnerable passages in global shipping. Piracy incidents, though significantly reduced from peak years, remain a concern in certain sections. The strait is jointly monitored by Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia.

For Asia's energy security, the Malacca Strait is critical: roughly 80% of China's oil imports and the vast majority of Japan's and South Korea's LNG imports transit through this corridor. TankerMap provides live tracking of all tankers currently in the Malacca zone, with real-time AIS positions updated every hour.

Other straits: Strait of Hormuz · Suez Canal · bab-el-mandeb · Strait of Gibraltar · Panama Canal
