The canonical TankerMap database currently contains 876 LNG carrier profiles, with recent observations contributing to 5,375 tankers updated across all segments today. The live LNG fleet shows individual ships, flags, DWT, destinations and observation freshness.
2. What makes an LNG carrier different
LNG is transported near −162°C, so a carrier needs insulated cryogenic tanks, controlled boil-off handling and specialized loading systems. Cargo capacity is normally quoted in cubic metres rather than DWT. Vessel size, propulsion, boil-off rate and terminal compatibility all influence which trade a ship can serve.
3. Moss and membrane containment
Moss-type ships use self-supporting spherical tanks that are visually prominent above deck. The tanks are structurally independent from the hull and are robust, but the shape uses hull volume less efficiently.
Membrane ships use thin primary barriers supported by insulation and the surrounding hull structure. Their box-like cargo spaces use internal volume efficiently and dominate much of the modern large-carrier fleet. The containment design cannot always be inferred reliably from a distant AIS position or a generic vessel-type label.
4. Routes, terminals and market context
LNG voyages connect dedicated liquefaction and regasification terminals. Important route constraints include Hormuz, Suez, Panama and Malacca; compare current movement in strait analytics. Prices do not prove where a particular cargo is going, but JKM and TTF provide market context for Asia and Europe.
5. What tracking can and cannot show
AIS can show identity broadcasts, position, speed, course, navigation status, draft and a crew-entered destination when those fields are transmitted and received. It does not directly disclose cargo ownership, contract terms, containment condition or the buyer. Use the LNG tanker tracker for live positions and treat inferred cargo or destination claims as estimates unless supported by independent evidence.
