About Kharg Island

Iran's largest crude oil export terminal, located on Kharg Island in the northern Persian Gulf, approximately 25 km off the coast of Bushehr province. Kharg Island handles approximately 90% of Iran's crude oil exports, with a loading capacity exceeding 5 million barrels per day. The terminal can accommodate the world's largest tankers (ULCCs) through its T-shaped sea island jetty. The island features massive storage tanks (28 million barrel capacity) fed by multiple pipelines from Iran's southwestern oil fields. Kharg has been a strategic target during conflicts — it was heavily bombed during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88) and has been fully rebuilt since.
