Strait of Hormuz - Live Tanker Traffic
Iran / Oman · 39 km wide · ~21 tankers/day average
The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most strategically critical maritime chokepoint, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the wider Indian Ocean. Roughly 21 million barrels of oil per day - approximately 20% of global petroleum liquids consumption - flow through this narrow passage, making it irreplaceable in the global energy supply chain.
Located between Iran to the north and Oman to the south, the strait is only 39 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, yet it carries a larger volume of oil than any pipeline or canal on Earth. Both the inbound and outbound shipping lanes are just 3.2 kilometres wide, separated by a 3.2-kilometre buffer zone. The waters are shared by VLCCs, Suezmax tankers, LNG carriers, and naval vessels from multiple countries.
TankerMap tracks all tankers currently transiting or anchored in the Strait of Hormuz in real time, using AIS data updated every hour. The live map below shows vessel positions, speed, cargo status, and destinations for every tracked tanker in the strait zone.
